It is a story of Santiago is an old fisherman who hasn’t caught a fish in 84 days. People now call him "salao," meaning very unlucky. Manolin, a young boy Santiago once taught to fish, now works on another boat because his parents want him to. But Manolin still helps Santiago with his fishing gear and brings him food. They often talk about baseball and Joe DiMaggio. That night, Santiago dreams of his younger days.

On the 85th day, Santiago goes out very early, rowing far into the Gulf Stream. He first catches a small albacore, then hooks a huge marlin. The fish is so big and strong that it pulls his small boat far out to sea. Santiago holds on all night and eats the albacore the next morning to stay strong. When he finally sees the marlin, he realizes it's bigger than his boat.

Even though he’s trying to catch the fish, Santiago respects and admires it. He sees it as a noble opponent. On the third day, the marlin starts to circle the boat, and Santiago, tired and almost dreaming, finally manages to kill it with a harpoon. He ties the giant fish to his boat and starts heading home.
